Why Shenzhen is a logistics powerhouse
Shenzhen sits within 100 km of three of the world's busiest container ports (Shenzhen's own Yantian and Shekou terminals, plus Hong Kong), has a major international airport, and is connected to Europe's inland markets via China-Europe rail. Most goods can be in a buyer's warehouse within days by air or a few weeks by sea.
This density of options means freight rates from Shenzhen are typically competitive, and multiple modes can be combined — sea for the bulk, air for urgent components, rail for European inland destinations.
The main modes at a glance
Sea freight (FCL/LCL): the lowest cost per unit and the default for volume. A 20ft container typically carries 25–28 CBM of usable cargo, a 40ft container about 55–58 CBM. Transit time from Shenzhen to Rotterdam is roughly 25–35 days, to Los Angeles 15–20 days. LCL (less than container load) suits cargo under 10 CBM.
Air freight and express: for high-value, time-critical or low-weight cargo. Direct flights from Shenzhen (SZX) reach major hubs in 10–20 hours; door-to-door express (DHL, FedEx, UPS) adds 2–5 days of transit and clearance. Cost is 5–10x sea freight per kilogram, so the decision is a simple trade-off between inventory cost and freight cost.
Rail and multimodal: China-Europe rail freight takes 15–20 days from Shenzhen-area departure to destinations such as Duisburg or Warsaw, priced between sea and air. It is a strong option for European buyers balancing lead time and cost, though schedules can tighten in peak seasons.
Avoiding customs delays
Customs delays almost always trace back to four causes: incorrect HS codes, missing or mismatched documents (invoice, packing list, B/L, certificates), prohibited or restricted goods shipped without declaration, and inconsistent weights or values between documents. Provide the freight forwarder with accurate data before booking, and ask your supplier to pre-shipment-inspect and photograph the cargo.
The importer of record — your own company or your customs broker — is responsible for the declaration in the destination country. Working with a licensed broker who knows your product category is the cheapest insurance you can buy.

Sensitive goods are items with restrictions short of a full ban — lithium batteries, liquids, powders, magnets, some electronics. They require special handling, additional documentation (e.g., MSDS, UN38.3 for batteries) and cost more to ship. Declare them honestly to the forwarder; undeclared sensitive goods are the top cause of confiscation and penalties.
Who is responsible if the shipment is delayed in customs?
Legally, the importer of record bears responsibility for the declaration at destination, so delay costs fall on the buyer side unless the cause is the seller's document error. Contractually, you can protect yourself by specifying in the purchase order that documents must be issued within X days of shipment and that the seller is liable for corrections caused by their documentation mistakes.
